Coloring has been used as a way to calm and focus children since at least the Middle Ages. In the 14th century, Saint Francis of Assisi is said to have used colored ribbon to distract children during sermons. By the 17th century, coloring books specifically for children were being published in Europe.
The first known American color book was published in 1879 by McLoughlin Bros. Titled “The Little Folks’ Painting Book,” it contained outlines of animals and plants that could be filled in with watercolors. Such books became increasingly popular in the early 20th century.
